The Great Northern Gig Poster

For my gig poster, I wanted to do something that was edgy but didn't feel too punk rock. I wanted to create a poster that was simple yet detailed as well. I wanted to use shadow to create depth and to give an interesting and moody feel to the poster without being too over the top.
Here is a picture of my sketches. I really wanted to do something that included a shark, waves, and possibly a compass. I also thought about doing some sort of ship wreck, but I decided to go a different route and not include that.
Here are my drafts for my gig poster. From the first to the third, there were a lot of changes. For my first draft, it was pretty much just a basic idea of what I wanted. I knew that I wanted a lot of the ocean below the shark, and I chose my fonts and basic colors. For my second draft, I tried out half-tone and added some more details like my peers suggested. For my third draft, I realized that I wasn't loving the half-tones, and it just felt like there was too much on the poster. So, I took out all of the half-tones, added shadow and different shades instead, moved my details up away from the edge, and added a lot of detail to my shark. I really wanted the poster to still feel detailed, but it needed to be less busy and pixilated feeling. I smoothed out some edges like a peer suggested, and I was really happy with the end product.
I did a lot of different things with my gig poster. I started out pretty simple, tried doing a lot of detail, and in the end got somewhere in between, just like I wanted in the beginning. I added detail in a way that felt simple yet really gave the poster some much needed depth. I really just wanted the poster to feel like it had intentional detail, but after a lot of struggling with half-tones and trying to figure out how to make it look good, I decided that the over pixilated look was not one that I wanted for my gig poster.
